Also known as the Five-Oh-Sink by its men, the 506th PIR was commanded by Colonel Robert Sink of the 101st Airborne Division.

They linked up with the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (The Five-Oh-Deuce), where they were assigned to capture five bridges north-west of the Dutch city of Eindhoven.
