2nd Squad
2nd Squad was a unit originally attached to the 502nd PIR, operating within "Fox Company"'s 3rd Platoon. In September, the platoon was reformed and re-assigned as a reconnaissance unit independent of the 502nd.
Operational history
During the initial droppings on D-Day, 2nd Squad took significant casualties, the only known survivors being Private James Marsh; Private First Class Dean Winchell and Corporal Franklin Paddock. Due to its depleted size, Corporal Joe Hartsock was routinely transferred from 3rd Squad to serve as 2nd's "acting sergeant". After the victory in Carentan and the subsequent Battle of the Bloody Gulch at Hill 30, Hartsock was officially promoted to Sergeant and took on official duty as the squad's leader. Alongside Hartsock, several other soldiers were officially made part of 2nd Squad - Corporal Jacob Campbell; Private Derrick McConnell and Private First Class William Paige officially-transferred from the tactically-worthless 1st Squad. In the action at St. Sauveur on June 16, PFC. Paige was fatally-wounded by shrapnel from a tank round; his final action before dying was to drag Sergeant Hartsock into some ruins, out of the tank's range.
Operation Market Garden
On September 19, a German soldier shot and killed PFC James Marsh from a burning building. PFC Dean Winchell was killed when a mortar round struck a cafe he was inside some three days later; Sergeant Hartsock, who was also inside, was left paralysed. As a result, Staff Sergeant Matthew Baker, 3rd Platoon's commander during Operation Market Garden, selected Corporal Franklin Paddock for promotion to Sergeant to replace him, despite Corrion wanted to lead the 2nd Squad.
